How long should a school promotional video be?

By Adam Chetter, Northern Education Videos

The short answer

Most school promotional videos work best at two to three minutes. Interview-led prospectus films can run a little longer. Social media clips should be under a minute.

Why shorter usually wins

Families often watch your film on a phone, sometimes between other tasks. So a film that gets to the point keeps their attention. The opening seconds matter most, so start with something that shows who you are.

A tight film also feels confident. It shows the best of your school, rather than everything that happens in a day.

However, too short can feel thin. A good promotional film needs time for classrooms, play, care and the people behind them. Two to three minutes usually gives it that room, without losing anyone along the way.

It also respects busy parents. A film they finish is worth more than one they leave halfway.

Lengths that work

Music-led or spoken word

A music-led film moves along at the pace of the track. It suits schools where staff would rather not speak on camera.

A spoken-word film puts your head teacher and staff at the front. It takes longer, because each person needs time to make their point.

Either way, the edit keeps only the strongest moments. That is what makes a film feel shorter than it is. A strong opening and a clear ending also help, so families know what they watched.

Signs a film is too long

A film usually runs long when it tries to show every room, club and year group. As a result, the strongest moments get buried.

Long interview answers are another common cause. One clear sentence from a pupil often says more than a minute from an adult.

Repeated shots also slow things down. If two clips show the same thing, the edit only needs one.

So when you watch the first edit, ask a simple question. Would a parent who has never visited still be watching at the end? If not, it is worth trimming before you approve it.

A useful test is to watch it on your own phone, away from your desk.

Length on different screens

The screen changes how a film feels. On a phone, two minutes can feel long, so the pace needs to stay brisk.

On a hall screen at an open evening, the same film feels shorter. Visitors are standing and chatting, so they dip in and out.

So a looped film should make sense from any point. Clear, warm scenes work better than a story that needs the start.

On social media, the first two seconds decide whether people stop. A vertical clip that opens on movement or a face works best.

Also add captions to any film with speech. Many families watch with the sound off, especially on phones.

Plan the length before filming

Agree the length and style at the online production meeting. Then the filming day can be planned around the shots that matter most. It also helps staff know what to expect, and when.

Think about where the film will be used. A homepage film and an open evening loop may suit different lengths. My guide on where to use your school video covers the main places.

If you need both, one filming day can usually give you a main film and shorter clips. That way, one visit covers your homepage, open evenings and social media.

I also plan the day so staff can focus on teaching. Lessons carry on as normal, while I film around them.

Bring examples you like to the meeting, from any school. It is the quickest way to agree a pace and length.

Questions schools ask

How much does a school promotional video cost?

Every package is listed on my prices page, including a half day option. Each price is a starting point, so ask if your needs are different.

Can we have a short version for social media too?

Yes. Short clips can usually be cut from the same filming day, so ask at your consultation.

How long does filming take?

Most school films are filmed in one or two days. I plan around your timetable, so lessons carry on as normal.

Can we ask for changes to the length after the first edit?

Yes. You approve the film before it is shared. So tell me if any part feels too long.

Is a longer film better?

Not usually. A focused main film, plus subject videos, shows your curriculum more clearly.
